Project overview

Hexagon Manufacturing was going through a wealth of digital transformation and part of the new direction was to transition customer facing native services into cloud based apps. Hexagon already had a native app based sheet metal quoting service but it was deemed out of date, not fully in line with current customer demands and not globally scalable.

The aim of this project was to run the discovery and UX definition to develop a cloud based quoting service to enable user generated sheet metal production quotes to be created by uploading CAD models and specifying customer requirements before being presented with a quote that they can tailor for their needs.

Mapping out workflow was critical

We ran several stakeholder consultation sessions that allowed us to gather information to confidently carry out a digital audit of a similar but ageing company service. Individual journeys, user needs, quoting workflows and refining capability were all documented. A look at competitor features also highlighted where we needed to be focusing our attention and the standard of products already in the marketplace.

Customer needs were defined

Through qualitative interviews with stakeholders and lighthouse customers, two distinct user groups were identified; ‘Estimator - end customer’ and ‘Estimator - Subcontractor’ with the latter needing the ability to edit and refine a quote once it had been generated. Creating personas and a detailed technical specification allowed us to drill down into user needs and specific feature requirements.

Stakeholder evaluation provided valuable insights

Whilst the product was pre launch, we built up the trust of lighthouse customers and ran some qualitative interviews to understand how the product was perceived.

Initial feedback was positive and detailed refinement allowed us to work closely with the product manager to address build concerns and get the product ready for build.

Continual refinement and feature enhancement

To ensure the product fell inline with the company wide Nexus Design System the product was further refined to meet the design system standards and align with other Nexus products.

Continual refinement was carried out with close consultation with the Product Owner which allowed further features to be designed.

The product progressed into development and a parallel feature enhancement programme was initiated to ensure developers were supposed and features continued to grow.
